It's the usual paradox of humanity. When you're young you have energy and a degree of freedom and potential, but you're too stupid to use it properly. By the time you have wisdom and understanding to properly take advantage of those things, you no longer have them and can only look back on how you wasted them.

Sort of like the kid/adult dichotomy. As a kid you have freedom and lots of time, but no money and no real autonomy to do anything with it. But once you get the money and autonomy as an adult, you no longer have the freedom or the time to use it.

Youth is wasted on the young.
