The mastermind behind the series worked for square when gears was made. Then he left and started working under uhh monolith soft I believe? And that was a company under namco. There he made the saga trilogy, but it was originally meant to be at longer. As in, the first half of 2 was supposed to be part of 1 in his original drafts. And he wanted it to be 6 games long. But alas, he had to do cuts.

Following this, he ended up getting to work with Nintendo who basically said he could take his time to fine tune what he wanted to make. And bam, suddenly blade came out. And given the years between each entry he's not being pushed for a release or to make cuts because of it being too big a dream for him to fully realize.

Basically though, the entire concept is his life's work.
