It's not like this is the first time she's been an idiot. It would arguably be harder to think of times when she WASN'T an idiot than it would be to think of all the times she was. There's also the theory that half her appeal is that she plays herself off as being more clumsy and stupid than she actually is because it makes her seem more relateable to audiences, which in turn is at the core of a lot of her popularity.
