Topic | Game of Thrones is just a crappy LotR that's ten times as long |
Zeus 09/08/17 3:05:34 AM #13: | WhiskeyDisk posted... Zeus posted...There are no magical swords, very few spells, etc. No, Valerian steel and dragon glass certainly don't. Dragon glass is literally just obsidian. Nor is Valerian steel magic, it's just super-heated iron. The flaming swords aren't magic swords, they're normal swords enhanced by prayer -- and they're one of the reasons why I said "little magic" as opposed to no magic. Virtually all of the magic in Game of Thrones involves power channeled from a god, whether it's the Lord of Light charging swords and reviving people or allowing them to quasi-shapeshift. ASOIAF eschews magic for realism, choosing to tone down the magical elements whereas Tolkien's word is fucking steeped in it. ASOIAF doesn't have swords which glow when orcs are near. It doesn't have ancient spirits taking the form of giant spiders. Its world doesn't show overt signs of gods and spirits crafting and controlling it. The primary villain isn't some elder spirit from another world; even if you count the Night King, he Sure, ASOIAF has elves but its dwarfs are just little humans rather than their own species. And, for whatever reason, you bring up dragons while ignoring that I specifically called ASAOIAF light on fantasy creatures. You have dragons and your manticores are just bugs. However, the difference between Tolkien and GRRM is that in a Tolkien work House Greyjoy's Kraken would be real *and* guarding something. It wouldn't be a plot-important creature, but just merely an obstacle. The Harry Potter series more closely embodies Tolkien's approach to a magical world than ASOIAF because the magic is just there and doesn't need to serve a purpose. Meanwhile what little magic is in ASAOIAF is plot-centric. --- (\/)(\/)|-| In Zeus We Trust: All Others Pay Cash ... Copied to Clipboard! |
