They're Watching (2016)
Directed by: Jay Lender, Micah Wright
Starring: Mia Faith, Brigid Brannagh, Kris Lemche, David Alpay, Carrie Genzel, Dimitri Diatchenko
Genre: Found footage, Comedy

They're Watching is an interesting entry into the found footage genre. While you may be hard-pressed to find any true new ground here, They're Watching is worth watching all the way to the ending. While it thinks its more clever than it actually is, there's still some palpable tension throughout, some nice gore shots, a creepy town with some good lore, and a few of moments of comedy that vary from cringey to decently funny.

The premise goes like this: a host of a traveling, house-remodeling type of reality series and her goofball camera crew go back to a small village in Moldova to see the results of a real fixer-upper bought by Becky Westlake. The camera crew is nothing new personality-wise (the jerkass sex hound, the more serious one, and the spoiled blonde girl), but the film does a good job at making them feel real and believable nonetheless and the found footage aspect makes you care for them a little bit more as you're always right up there with them. The host Kate is a bit more of an asshole, though she gets some sympathy votes later on.

It all starts to go downhill when Sarah and Greg attempt to film a very personal funeral service, which the people of the village strictly disallow. The villagers become very hostile towards the crew, and despite some attempts at brokering peace, it naturally ends up getting worse and worse every time.

It feels at times that the film runs in place, with extended scenes at the local restaurant or just scenes of b-roll footage filmed by the crew. However, at its best, They're Watching really does deliver some edge-of-your seat thrills and chills; just try not to feel the chilling atmosphere of the restaurant after Sarah drunkenly shouts out the Moldovan word for "witch" as everything becomes dead silent. I can forgive a few missteps for moments like these.

I often find many problems with the found footage genre, but They're Watching does it really well, chiefly for me being that the camera doesn't shake every which way making you sick. The reasons they keep filming are fine I suppose too, but flimsy as usual, especially to a certain point. The found footage aspect also plays into the ending a little bit.

Ultimately, it's fun, doesn't take itself too seriously, and will provide some nice chills over an hour and a half.
