I work retail and I know plenty of people with far more numerous and significant negative personality traits. Shinji displays bravery at times in the face of death, just like he sometimes shows cowardice. Shinji shows kindness just as much as he shows selfishness. And ~~the end of the show displays is capacity to change for the better, and to reject Instrumentality even though it will lead him to more pain.~~ But you choose to ignore the subtleties because it doesn't fit your narrative.
