wait who's steel?

John Henry Irons was a construction worker who fell off a skyscraper and Superman caught him. When he tells Superman "I owe you my life", Supes responds "then make it worth something."

He watched after the inner city kids (I can't remember if he did before meeting Superman), and all at once Superman dies and the illegal weapons trade brings mayhem to the neighborhood. He was basically Batman-level strength and speed to begin with (they kind of hint he has some connection to the John Henry of the tall tales) but he decides to resolve both these situations by becoming the next "Man of Steel."

So he builds himself a badass suit of power armor and a huge hammer, and tops it off with the Superman cape.

Long story short, he proves himself pretty quickly during Superman's absence and return, and Superman approves and actually comes up with the name "Steel" himself.

Dude's a legit character that could use more love tbh.
