really strong episode this week

the premise was unique and interesting and had a clever twist and resolution to it. definitely reminds me of some of the better season 1/2 episodes in that regard. like this level of main plot writing is what I expect from rick and morty.

jessica has always been a weird character though and continues to be here. like I have no idea what was up with her actually caring about morty and coming to help save him at the end. also weren't there episodes where the two were shown to be together? like tiny rick? but now here they are acting as if they have never been together before. or I can't really tell. she just feels like she is not a real character at all, and it's one of the bigger problems with any plot that involves her, and this episode did not really do anything to resolve it. like, it featured her more, but it did not do anything to flesh out her character aside from just being someone that morty is obsessed with. this subplot really did nothing for me.

rick's stuff was all good. the toxic version of him, the good version of him, when he finally turns back into himself at the end. also the reveal that he purged his irrational attachments and so those ended up with the toxic version. really clever twist on the idea. obviously the machine would have no objective way of measuring and determining toxicity. if it did it could not possibly exist in the world of rick and morty. one of the big overall themes of the show is the separation between objective and subjective realities. so this was a nice little consistency to that fact.

I thought stacy was funny. the idea that morty is just irrationally obsessed with one girl is really, really cliche. him meeting some random girl at a bar and hooking up with her feels more real. we also know in the past that he has basically forgotten about jessica and basically gone after whatever women he meets on his adventures before, so this didn't really feel out of character. it is kind of funny that this aspect of his character did NOT get purged with the machine. that means that he does NOT view this trait of himself as a negative trait. meaning that his supposed "love" for jessica is indeed false. he is constantly thinking about other women all the time and is willing to drop jessica at any moment when something else comes along. they should have explored this idea more. him just ending up with some different random redhead in new york at the end felt cheap.

the idea that he intentionally let the call run at the end when he heard jessica's voice was cheesy. but it seems like this is indeed what the writers wanted us to think. goes against basically everything that I just typed above, which made the tone of the episode feel pretty inconsistent.

I guess ultimately the rick stuff was really well done while the morty stuff was pretty damn sloppy. now that I'm giving serious thought to the episode I probably rate it a bit lower than I initially thought in my head. although I do still thing the structure of the main plot and the clever aspects of science fiction were still season 1/2 tier.

the battle between the two ricks in the house was definitely a highlight. them wrecking the house was amazing. it's always great to see rick unleashed, see how much damage he can cause. to see two rick's battling was just a treat.

beth and summer have been pretty underutilized the last few episodes. though I do not think they had a place here either. seems like they were just haphazardly thrown into the rick battle scene for comedic effect. but this actually creates an inconsistency. toxic rick is supposedly the one who got the irrational attachments. but during the battle it's the original rick who tells summer to run away, and begs toxic rick not to drag beth into it. whoops.
