Deciding whether to be in a relationship with someone, or not to be in a relationship, is a decision when weighing the value of the two choices. It boils down to,

"Do I value what I can gain from entering a relationship with this person more than what I will potentially lose from entering a relationship?"

This rarely is an absolute. That is, you will be hard-pressed to find someone who would agree with the statement:

"There is no such person or circumstance that would provide benefit enough that I would consider being in a relationship with them."

Instead, it boils down to exactly what you said, when applied to specific people.

"I do not value the benefits of entering a relationship with this specific person more than what I will potentially lose from being in a relationship with them."
