The opinions on Satan in Judeo-Christian groups is pretty varied. There are basically three main flavors;
- Satan is a rebel. He created sin through tempting Eve. He is constantly trying to draw people away from God because he is angry, prideful, and pretty much an all around dick. He'll get his at some point after God is tired of his shenanigans.
- Satan is a 9-5 sort of guy. He is just the warden of God's prison. He's actually on pretty good terms with the guy and serves a vital purpose for God by punishing evil doers and testing people's faith and loyalty to God. May not even be the snake in the Garden of Eden.
- Satan and God are two almost equal, Yin and Yang like forces that balance each other out in our current world, but will eventually be beaten by God. Satan is opposite God in almost every way and creates a balance, but that balance will not always be the status quo.
Because of the diversity of beliefs among different sects and branches among Judeo-Christian groups (even just among Christian groups), it's impossible to discuss further without specifying a specific belief (unless you are just asking people what their personal beliefs are, then each Christian from a different group is going to give you a completely different answer).
