Like I saw my little cousin's common core math homework. I can't remember the exact numbers, but let's just say it was 27+36.

They had illustrations to choose from and everything. Essentially trying to show you to add up the tens in your head. Like "two tens plus three tens plus 7 ones plus 6 ones"

Or "add three to the 27 and subtract three from the 36 so it's 30+33 and easier to do in your head."

Like I'll never understand it. We've been behind in these subjects for so long and we try to take a different approach and suddenly it's wrong because "that's now how we did it". Like you think we're going to catch up to other countries by doing the same thing that was making us lag behind? FFS


Is that really what common core is? I wrote it off because I saw my little cousins and the explanation made no sense to me but making it 30+33 is how I've always done math in my head.
