I think it's akin to how women are attracted to money, which is not related directly to human biology itself. They are attracted to it's implications. In the case of obesity being attractive in times of famine, it wasn't the obesity itself that was attractive, but the symbol it had for survival in the given time like having a lot of money makes you statistically sexier in today's world.
