I would say language does not count as an invention,

Language is an invention and I feel a little silly for not giving a nod to that, since it facilitated society. And it's absolutely an artificial construct.

but that fire does. Or at least, the control of fire is an invention. It requires knowledge and technology to perform.

Well.... eh. Historically, humans had such little control over fire that they almost never made fire themselves and instead relied on some of their neighbors fire. And I'm not sure controlling fire necessarily counts an invention.

Meanwhile, language is a natural development of social beings. True language as we understand it is something we evolved into over time. Controlling fire is more of a specific invention. Humans had to evolve language as a skill over generations, but once one dude figured out how to set a fire, that could spread to anyone.

While language has evolved over time, so have boats, so have houses, so has everything else. The idea that things change as we get better with them doesn't invalidate the fact that it's an invention. And while most creatures communicate, they don't use everything close to language which is more of an artificial construct designed to express complex ideas that couldn't be conveyed via traditional communication.
