Blood Money is def the benchmark but Absolution is fine. Never understood the hate for it. But, opinions are opinions. Playing through Dark Souls 2: SotFS right now. Don't get the hate for that, either. Never played vanilla DkS2, heard they fixed a bunch of stuff for SotFS, but what I've played is enjoyable. Might even like it more than the first.
