10 games and a grand total of three female characters: Roll, Kalinka, and Splash Woman. If you add the kart racing game then there was a female reporter bot, but who cares about Battle & Chase? Capcom didn't even bother localizing that one until it was added as a bonus in the X Collection.

Roll > Splash Woman > Kalinka > Plum. Plum is completely irrelevant, even in the one spin-off she appeared in; Kalinka is cute, but ruined for reasons mentioned in another write-up ; Splash Woman is notable as the only female Robot Master, but they just had to make her the most frail and take double damage from attacks because even if you're an artificial lifeform just being referred to with female pronouns automatically makes you an inferior being ((actually it could just be a balancing thing because she's harder to hit with the Mega Buster than other bosses, and Cut Man is even more frail than she is, but let me pretend to be outraged anyway)); Roll at least has Marvel VS Capcom, Tatsunoko VS Capcom, and Powered Up for playable appearances.

...though Roll has a tendency to be stuck as an absolute bottom tier joke character, so even those playable appearances are a bit dubious. I like trying to win with a cute little housekeeping girl because she's so adorable & it just feels better winning with such a weak character, but I can see why normal people would hate Roll in her few playable appearances.


I do really like this song. I read somewhere that this was a remix of another Robot Master's theme and I planned on commenting on that, but I can't find which one it was and don't want to keep clicking every theme until I hit it again. Well, whatever; this is an example of a remixed song being done right and probably the only time in Mega Man 9 did it right. It's different enough to stand on its own and felt like an improvement over the original.
