The problem I have all of this is, okay sure if he used it randomly as a joke out of context I would be upset, but he used it in the context of making a joke referencing slavery times. "House N*****" is what they were referred as so if he said anything else it wouldn't have made sense. I don't see the big deal. As much as I dislike Bill Maher, I can understand why he went there because the previous comment had most of us thinking about slavery.
