It's not like you're forced to go fast; you can move at whatever pace you want and react to enemies/obstacles as you see fit. I'll admit it is quite fun to race through the levels in that game, but you kinda have to earn the ability to do that via learning the level, or be willing to take risks (though with 9 lives you were somewhat encouarged to take risks).
