Points in favor of RB remakes: - Pokemon GO was/is a huge success, there's a lot of money in the nostalgia now. - They're the only ones you can't play on the 3DS not counting virtual console. - In relation to that, it's been the longest since we've visisted them. FRLG are older than DP. - The GBA is two generations of consoles ago, just in line with any other remake. - SM is extremely packed with Kanto references. Red and Blue appaering is perhaps the biggest hint. - Lillie goes to Kanto in SM, perhaps indicating some continuation of the story over there, although this might hint more to a game that takes place there, rather than a direct remake. - The 20th movie that is coming this month (already had a sneak peak in France I believe) is a throwback to when Ash was in kanto.
One advantage for RB remakes is the ability to revisit Kanto under the current Physical/Special split, which didn't exist in the FRLG games.
