You aren't wrong, games had a lot more depth back then. Even story driven games didn't make you sit through long cut scenes. If you wanted to find out the whole story, you had to explore and find books, notes, or random conversations happening. It made it so replay-ability wasn't "find x collectibles" or "complete these achievements", it was "discover things you missed that add to the experience".

Somewhere around 2001 everything just became linear and spoon-fed.
