Why was Trabia Garden in the middle of nowhere?

Wasn't that the one which had crashed? It was probably a more important place in the past.

There's ten population centers. More importantly, they dispatch mercenaries in a world with (excluding Esthar due to their extreme isolationism) there is one global military superpower. It's a wonder they weren't bombed sooner.

Yes, the overall population and settlements are tiny.

Something that has always bothered me about RPGs, especially the old ones...is a world with maybe a couple of dozen people living on it really worth saving? More people were killed on 9/11 than populate the world of most RPGs.

I've often asked myself if I'd be doing the residents of a game world a favor in just allowing the 3 dozen people living in the world to die given that they all seem to be powerless in an environment also populated by an infinite number of monsters...

I'm not sure why they never try to portray the worlds as being larger. Besides limiting your worldmap, there a lot of ways to make the world seem bigger such as opting for more buildings or taller buildings with inaccessible areas. Towns where you only have a handful of buildings and *most* are shops are just weird unless your world is super-connected and even then it's a stretch.

Granted, in older settings you could *kinda* justify having fewer buildings then have a lot of shared space.
