They went somewhere in SS with the pokemon walking behind you, in X/Y they finally had clothes, but every time they come up with some basic modern rpg feature they just throw it out in the next game and replace it with some meaningless gimmick in the next. We actually have more trainer customization options in SM, but we still don't have much starting customization although we have shops early on with more selection. Plus nothing you described is a basic modern RPG feature. And most features are actually kept.
