Given he's still alive, I'm going to assume you disapprove of a large chunk of his voice acting. I honestly didn't notice a drop in quality, but then I guess I don't play those games for the main quest.

It's not a question of drop in quality - half the lines are literally delivered by a different actor. If you have a good ear for voices, it's kind of obvious (and if you don't have a good ear for voices, then I understand why you might not notice).

Basically, any dialogue he delivers which is mostly plot exposition is clearly Max von Sydow. Then, where there's a line that is basically gameplay mechanics/quest instructions (ie, "Go here, do this thing, read this book, kill this monster"), the voice changes radically - the volume is much louder, the accent is gone, the timbre shifts. It's very clearly someone trying to do an impression of the existing voice lines from Max von Sydow, but doing so very poorly.

I said he "apparently died" during development mostly as a joke. But it definitely seems like they had one recording session with him early in the process for the narrative elements, and then, for whatever reason, either couldn't get him or didn't want him back to do a second recording session for the gameplay dialogue, and just figured they'd get someone else to do it.

Which was honestly a terrible idea. Granted, I'm sure they simply didn't give a single fuck because they assumed most people would be like you and not even bother playing the main quest anyway, or that those who did wouldn't notice (but damn it, it's hard NOT to notice). If they couldn't get him back to do the later lines, they should just have gotten someone else to redo his original dialogue so it would at least be consistent.

The lines that are actually in his voice are fine - they sound a bit old and tired, but since he's playing "doddering outcast scholar" it fits the role perfectly.
