The mall near me is still fairly active, but a bunch of shops have closed up. Not enough for me to say it looks dead, but it's definitely dying. I don't expect it to still be around in 10 years since most people just go to the mall to hang out instead of buy things.

There were actually two malls near me (they were like 3 miles away from each other) but the other one closed down about 15 years ago. It was the mall that had Service Merchandise and Montgomery Ward.

The mall that is still open has Sears and JC Penny. I figure once Sears goes belly up, it will die pretty soon after that.

I'm also not too far from the mall in Bradley, Illinois and it's pretty much dead. Me and my friend took a trip out there cause we were bored a few weeks ago and like the fountains are filled with dirt and there were only a handful of stores still open and the food court was completely empty except for a lone A&W Root Beer shop.
