What is the point of these ISIS attacks, from a strategic perspective? I'm going to assume the dudes at the top have some brains beyond "yay we killed infidels!" or else they wouldn't have gotten as far as they have.

Is it really just trying to stir up anti-Muslim bigotry to make recruitment at home easier, as I've heard some say? Still seems like way too much effort

The goal is making all Muslims believe they are the enemy of everyone in the West. There are about 1.8 billion Muslims in the world. A caliphate that unites any significant fraction of that number would be a force to be reckoned with.

This is why it's important in the wake of a tragedy like this to remember that for every 1 shithead who carries out an attack like this, there are dozens, scores, hundreds of innocent Muslims who just want to live peaceful lives, go to work, and hang out with their families.
