I think the people who disparage it just find it harder to go back to after playing the later games in the series, but if you're a first time player like I was it's still great. I haven't played through any of the others either. It's by no means a bad game but all the grinding and all the dungeoncrawlery makes for poor replayability. Some people really do like dungeon crawlers for some reason but my personal metrics for a good dungeon are as follows: 1. Can I make it through without going back out the way I came in to go to an inn and heal more than once or twice? 2.
