People constantly bringing up individual games as a reason for why gaming is "still" good is all a product of the Casual Revolution of 2007. Due to social media and the centralized internet, gaming (like most other things) are in massive episodic waves of what the world is buzzing about. "OMG have you played Bloodborne!" in a few months becomes "OMG have you played Witcher 3!", with a couple of fun but primitive indie titles sandwiched in between.

Before 2007 gaming was a cohesive unit. You played games. There were consoles, PC games, genres were well represented on a year to year basis. One month you were playing a 13 year old game, the next month it was a brand new game. You didnt care about needing to be in the current episode/flavor of the half year AAA big budget cinematic shit, you just gamed. Now people dont play video games anymore for the sake of playing. They do it because they want to feel like they are in the current episode of what the centralized internet has a dumb hard on for. Nobody will give a fuck about Tales of Vesperia in 5 years. Hell nobody does already. The Last of Us? Already pretty much forgotten and everyone has moved on. This is why gaming is shit since 2007, and why the centralized internet is fucking stupid and ruining us all. Fuck the Casual Revolution of 2007.

Ha I am in agreement Social Media is destroying our lives and people are caught up too much keeping up with the Jones. I wouldn't say games suck now but the media covering it sucks. Everyone has allowed themselves to get caught up in the marketing machine and allow the newest and hype to dominate substance.

I could care less if people forget The Last of Us because I won't, that game was an incredible storytelling experience.
