I don't know by what mechanism it became more widespread amongst black people nationwide though (slaves escaping to the North, free men and descendents simply moving north, etc.) Kool-Aid is a cheap drink and is popular amongst poor communities across the board. Black people as a group tend to be poorer and so all sorts of poor stereotypes become associated with them. Watermelon is one that's almost entirely out of nowhere.
