It surprises me as well. I thought 94 would be a strong favorite due to its combination of depth and power. Metroid, FFVI, MMX, and DKC are all games that can bust brackets.

I guess the fact that it doesn't have any of the top three SNES games (1991, 92, and 95 have one apiece) might have scared people away, but hell, it's got four of the top ten.

I also think the days when Super Metroid would get SFF-blasted by the likes of Mario World are over. Respect for SM has only grown over time, and it has seen a bigger resurgence with the rise of speedrunning than almost any other game.

I'm glad someone else brought up the rise of speedrunning; I wasn't sure how to take that into account. That's also the reason why I'm not buying the "SNES would easily win a console contest" line--I don't think anything in the SNES library could stand up to a ticket that has both OoT and SM64 on it.

so do you think Super Metroid is the top game of 94?

I'm open to that argument, just curious

In the greater gaming world, it's quite possible.

On this site, no. Final Fantasy VI still easily takes that honor, and deservedly so.

that's debatable, yeah. I think you could even argue Super Metroid over Mario World but I can't imagine anyone actually going all in on that.

it's freakin' MARIO circa 2017...?

Yes, absolutely. Super Mario Maker revived interest in a lot of the classic Mario titles; it's probably the main reason that I took the 1985 > 1987 upset even knowing full well that 1987 has the original Legend of Zelda. Though I'll probably vote for 1987 for exactly that reason.

Sadly, 1990 was given a monster in the first round. SMB3 will be a beast and could probably carry 1990 singlehandedly for a couple rounds with better bracket placement (and 1990 also has the original Final Fantasy to support it), but it's literally against Majora's Mask, FFIX, and Pokémon GSC. ...Which in turn get fed to 1996 in the next round. (Actually, that could be a decent match; it's a shame that it's not a Round 3 match. I think that 1996 and 2000 should both be among the eight strongest. Though I feel like Allen's dropping the ball on the noteworthy games of 1996; I'm not sure if I even know what "Dragon Force" is, and I guess RE1 is noteworthy because it started the franchise but I'm pretty sure that RE2 and RE4 are the highly regarded ones. Where's Kirby Super Star, Allen?)

ALl people need to see is a Triforce or Link sprite and 1987 will run away with it.

Mario 1 beat Zelda 1 twice in 2009

True that. Yet 1987 was the consensus favorite on the Guru.

It's funny. Normally I'd be thrilled at the idea of Mario > Zelda, but this is the one time that I think I prefer the Zelda game.
