Don't you have to be mentally ill to do that though? It takes a lot to override your natural self-preservation instinct. It takes extreme emotional duress.

One of the reasons that comes to mind is people being diagnosed with a terminal illness. It's often very expensive, painful, and life restricting to try to fight certain illnesses and many fights not being good odds to begin with---especially considering how far it has already progressed. Many choose to live out their last few months until it becomes clear the illness is taking over.

yes, that is an exception. The right to die thing with terminally ill patients is a pretty big issue. But what I'm talking about is an otherwise healthy individual just choosing out of the blue that they want to die. Humans are wired to do whatever they can to stay alive. If you no longer have the will to do that wouldn't that make you imbalanced?

Only other exception I could think of is martyrdom. Willingly dying for a cause or to protect someone else. But I don't think that happens very often these days.
