maybe prof doesn't overvalue society enough to feel a sense of obligation to it.

I guess I live in a Gilbert and Sullivan world because I don't know how you can NOT feel a certain sense of duty to society. Maybe I'm just hardwired for a desire to make the world better. Although it could be argued that the best way for me to do that is to stop talking, in which case I guess I'm ruining the world with every word I speak.

planning for your empty retirement instead of bettering the world in some way is the problem.

How do you better the world without children?

That's a question for Clive Owen.

I mean yeah, I'd ideally like to make the world better. I have to question whether it deserves it though. I'm sure if I had some grand scheme that could improve the world, I'd just bite the bullet and go for it, but I don't at this point. I do see the merit in teaching the younger generation to be better people and I agree with that ideology, but I don't want to be responsible for anyone but myself. for example, if my nieces and/or nephew contribute positively to society/the world and cite me as a positive influence, I'd take pride in that... however, I don't have duties to them and they don't depend on me to put food on the table or a roof over their heads. I prefer it this way and thus don't want to be in the position of being a parent.
