And I can believe the "they were good kids" narrative, I don't think it's really whitewashing. The public schools here are overall pretty good with bullying and I say that as someone who was a very nerdy kid and got picked on. Could easily have been better people than their parents rising above their home situation, about to turn 17 and get out. Unbelievably sad.
