I'm pretty sure the reason they do the episodes in the order they do up to this point because Sunnydale being effectively cut off from the rest of the world is the only reasonable way to keep them from getting sucked into this plotline. I did think it was funny earlier when no one in Sunnydale heard that like two hours away, the biggest city in Southern California was having a case of fire and brimstone and no sun for months on end. That part of it is more LA getting cut off from the world mixed with absurd levels of denial, I guess?
