He wasn't good at debating.

He was good at talking over people, making superfluous claims, and redirecting his points at marginalized people. There's a reason why he only went to college events hosted by him and his org. To give him the position of authority while simultaneously debating people he could pick and choose. As soon as he ran into someone greater than his ability to control and manipulate he shuts down the platform.
