I dunno if buffalo are the same way in this regard, but bison are evidently actual hell spawn. We went on a drive thru self-tour of wildlife in Minnesota last year, and the bison enclosure was like something out of Jurassic Park, with signs everywhere that were basically like "YOU ARE GOING TO DIE AND IT IS NOT OUR FAULT."

We didn't see any bison, and I was ok with that, lol.
so i've actually worked with bison, and they are fucking terrifying if you've got several running towards you. in general though they're not aggressive unless provoked. i'd be more worried about a moose then i would a bison, i've heard stories of them chasing people.

african buffalo have a whole different evolutionary selective pressure on them compared to american bison. these are animals that are predated on by multiple large predators, and it makes them predisposed to aggression. zebra too by the way.
