I think this is just the way most movie releases are going to be as time marches on. Everybody who is super excited about a film will go and see it opening weekend but the overwhelming majority of people are willing to just wait a few months and watch it when it hits a streaming service they are already paying for.
I think this is a lot of it. As someone who used to go to the movies all the time, I might go once or twice a year now. When movies hit streaming only a few months later at most, a lot will just wait. Way more convenient and if someone has a big screen TV, there's less reason to see it in a theater.
Oh, and there's no sitting through about 30 minutes of commercials and trailers before the movie starts (and that's after the set start time).
