I used to live in Washington state but Mount Saint Helens blew a year before I was born. So I only ever have read about this
Last time there was about 1/4 inch of ash. It feels, kind of sandy? If you're a gardener there is a silver lining to it all, volcanic ash is really really great. Collect it and mix it into your soil.
