I've only played the SNES version.
Fantastic story idea that goes hard at certain big moments but is let down a bit by a refusal to have much in the way of smaller events or write notable amounts of party dialogue. Like, FFIV's plot can be kind of stupid, yeah? But it's trying so hard that I get into it and enjoy it more than this anyways.

The gameplay is competent and good but nothing special. The way monster recruiting works is kind of a low-key disaster as a system but the game mostly routes around the damage by still having the humans and Borongo regardless and throwing Slime Knight and Golem at you with a 1/4 recruitment chance.
