I might be misremembering, but isn't The Planet, Lavos, and FATE/Belthasar all actively kinda playing an active role in trying to control time and space? The Planet brings the Dragons (the natural full evolution of the Reptites) into the world to combat FATE and Lavos, Lavos/Time Devourer (I think it does have sentience of some kind since it combined with Schala) is looking for the easiest route to consume time and space in general, and FATE/Belthasar is creating a pathway ultimately towards saving Schala by splitting her apart from Lavos with the Chrono Cross, and killing Lavos?

Time Devourer most definitely views Crono as a threat since you know, Crono successfully stopped it in MANY different ages (assuming you believe Time Devourer has some form of sentience since it is a combo of Schala and Lavos). The Dragons/The Planet views all plans towards messing with time and space as a threat so they are looking to destroy everything associated with it. FATE as a super computer programmed to come up with a solution to save time and space from Time Devourer comes up with... you know a super complicated plan involving cloning Schala and manipulating events to split her apart from Lavos.

It is not exactly easy to follow and it does "kill off" the old cast as these threats are all the equal to them and view their ability to time travel and stop them as the first potential fail point.

I get that it is not a true sequel and it does not follow the original cast. I appreciate and understand people hating that. I really respect the creators for wanting to go an entirely different direction and focus a lot on the crazy ways you can expand the whole time travel, alternate reality, simulatenous realities concept.
Lavos is just an alien. It's not trying to control anything. The planet is actively trying to keep itself alive, and FATE is trying to keep itself alive and have control.

Time devourer doesn't particularly view anyone as a threat so much as it just does its thing. Sort of like lavos.
