Good question. I've always gotten a new job and then quit, so I wouldn't know.

I just looked up the qualifications for unemployment in my state and got these results from the official government site.

To be eligible for benefits you must:

(1) Be unemployed or working less than full-time
(2) Have earned enough money to establish a valid claim
(3) Be unemployed through no fault of your own
(4) Be able to work, available for work, and looking for work

So that does appear you can't quit but also can't get yourself fired intentionally.
