But instead it just stands there waiting for me to pop it open like a pinata to spew rainbow vomit loot everywhere, and I am punished for not engaging with this awful mechanic by being deprived of ammo

I don't think I can play this. This isn't Doom. Visually and mechanically it just doesn't feel Doom to me. The way it's designed is the opposite of everything Doom was about.

I made the right choice of waiting for it to be free
