I've never really liked participation trophies, personally, but I think right-wing hate is misdirected, as it often is, towards the recipients, when I'm positive that they are exactly the kind of people/parents who demanded trophies for their kids to begin with. As a less-than-gifted athlete whose parents signed him up for every single sports program offered by the town we lived in, no one enjoys receiving the pity/you're-not-good-enough-for-anything-else-even-most-improved trophy, and I'm certainly not the one who wanted that to be a thing.
