Like right at that perfect time where the internet could spread urban legends and was a good way to viral market. A large amount of people would take it at face value. I don't even think watching it now has the same impact as it did back then.
Now it's a big name IP. These found footage movies tend to just have a build up to a haunted house ride for the climax and that's it. It's hard to imagine this being anything other than just another movie like 2016. Spooky things happen in a forest, they find the house from the first movie, there's a a twist to make the movie try and feel distinct and then it ends.
