Pretty sure it was common in DC media for a lot longer. One of their best animated movies imo is about the multiverse. It's called crisis on infinite earth's.

The concept is foe every decision made a alternate universe is created where the opposite happens resulting in infinite universes. The villain feels this makes any decision utterly meaningless as the opposite is gonna happenelsewhere. So hebfeels the only decision that can actually carry weight is to destroy the entire multiverse. He gets so close that batman breaks his no kill tule
That was actually the rare exception where it worked. Mostly because they kept it at two and made them different in clearly defined ways.

But no, he doesn't break the rule. He gives Owlman the choice to live or die, and Owlman decides it doesn't matter. Or at least, that Owlman decides it doesn't matter. It's kind of a plot hole, but it makes for a cool ending anyway.
