And I think this was one of the big issues people had with it. The fact that it didn't clearly indicate how much time passed makes it seem like they were wiped out because they were Eldians.

With the anime making it clearer that it's a much longer timespan, it fits more in with the message of war being an immutable part of existence. There's every possibility that no one really cares or even remembers the Eldian prejudice anymore and the island was bombed for entirely new reasons.

I guess that really does depend on how long it took for society to change. Hundreds of years? Sure, people can forget. We see in our own reality that the further we get away from the Holocaust and the more that the people who lived through it die we see an increase in denial, however the main cast themselves would only be in their 70s or so if it was 50-70 years, and there are kids much younger than them living through these times, so if it was that short of a timeframe then it would be logical the world power that ended them thought "they almost wiped us out once, now we must wipe them out for good to make sure they don't finish the job".

After all, part of the anti-Eldian propaganda wasn't just because they had scary titan powers, it was also because Eldia had a history of warmongering and conquest that led to the rest of the world despising them. Eren only reinstilled that fear for the survivors.
