I don't think either is racist.

It was made by Japanese dudes and is about as apolitical as it gets beyond "Big Pharma/Hyper Capitalism is bad" which they're not even riding as hard as Dead Rising did. They have no dog in the fight. It's a game about shooting zombies, they pick different locales to make the games more varied and interesting rather than the same thing over and over.

Reminder that OG RE2 (now called 1.5) was literally cancelled 70% into development for being too similar to RE1. RE3 was supposed to be a side title, not a main one. CV was supposed to be RE3.

RE1, 2, CV, 4, 5, 6,7 and 8 (also Rev1 and Rev2) all have very different locations and distinctive enemies to set them apart. You can instantly recongize what mainline RE game it is (aside from RE2/3) just from a glance due to visual design.

But each one despite being visually different was full of sterotypes. You can count the characters who aren't sterotypes in Resident Evil on one hand.

I think at best you can argue 40 year old Japanese dudes are insensitive to the optics of how something might be percieved in the west. A California studio wouldn't have black dudes in tribal skirts or a villain turn out to be a crossdresser and the "heroes" be more angry about that than the literal zombies.

But i don't really get how you can claim RE5 is racist without claiming at least 3, 4 and 6 are too. There's no malice behind it. It's all clearly designed to make the game better and more varied/distinctive/interesting. It just reeks to me of "Stereotypes and massacring Foreigners is fine as a rule but it's different when it's black people" which the IGN article effectively said.

I think if you single out one specific one as "This is racist but the rest are ok" you've kinda just exposed your own prejudice of the only group you care about.

I mean RE6 has a segment were: You very slowly drive around China watching sterotypical Chinese people die in agony all around you and no one called it a Neo-Nazi roller coaster.
