As soon as it became news that Trump stuffed some lawyers, all of his lawyers started demanding payment up front(not just their usual retainers), as well as continuous payment for services. This is where a lot of his campaign funding goes. To pay lawyers for his terrible defenses.

Like, Alina Habba literally didn't understand the court procedure and the judge had to explain it to her as if she were a child.

She might be badass in some other legal area (if I recall I heard someone explain her expertise/types of cases she normally tries) actually lies elsewhere, however she demonstrated she was wholly incompetent for representing Trump in the E Jean Carroll case and it speaks to both Trump "hiring the best people", and also who's left that's willing to take up his cases.

Also, the quality of his lawyers varies depending on the case. I think it was Glenn Kirschner talking about how his team handling the espionage case is actually doing a fantastic job representing him and it indicates that that case worries Trump the most because he's not using the chump squad to handle it.
