I agree with the changes made not so much because I think the Japanese is bad, but because the entire tone of wtf is supposed to be shown there is off (the picture is not a good example of it, but the character is supposed to look utterly goofy with his appearance) when you use the direct translation. That's sort of why you have localizers as that's the only way to actually get what the intended feel is.
