Because my wife is paying a butt load in student loans. They calculate her minimum required payment based on our joint income. So this year I tried having us file separately but it just wasnt worth it. My wife is a teacher and in 7 years all of her remaining loans will be forgiven regardless of what she contributed. So it makes sense to pay as little month to month as possible until then. Alas, if we do this well end up owing a ton in taxes each year.
