Actually, that's exactly what the genre originated as. "Having popular appeal." Just because one can now argue it has a different meaning doesn't mean that they have to abide by it over the original idea.
It's a specific genre that does refer to a general style of song. You can make whatever argument you want over it, and you can feel free to be wrong.
