And how many people do you think there have been who've participated in a "What?" chant, but weren't actually around for the Austin-era? Let alone for the part of that era when the chant started catching on. But they still participate because it's an incredibly fun, incredibly easy to understand concept.
"YES!" is pretty much the same. No matter how they felt about Bryan before, they see how much fun it is to chant "YES!" with everybody, and they want to be a part of that. I know my cousin, who's way more mark than smark, hated Daniel Bryan before, but loves him since "YES!" became a thing.
